Environmental Awareness

With the world’s increasing reliance on technology and diminishing resources it is vital that every individual understands their impact on the environment. Governments and businesses are regulated to an extent and encouraged in many ways to reduce their negative effect on the environment. Carbon emissions and the conservation of energy, management of waste and the conservation of natural resources and species are all key aspects of environmental preservation.

The average individual has a responsibility to understand how they impact on the environment. This awareness and education will lead to positive steps to reduce negative behaviours. It is simple to conserve energy through switching off appliances, sufficiently insulating homes and avoiding excessive use of personal transport, while it takes a little more understanding to avoid purchasing unsustainable foods that are at risk of becoming exhausted, or supporting unscrupulous companies that employ techniques that adversely affect the environment. Each person must realise that when the actions of one are multiplied a big difference can be made.

In business, companies are encouraged to be environmentally and socially responsible with a system of credits and penalties imposed by the country’s governments to varying degrees around the world. Businesses are required to pay the government an amount relating to their volume of carbon emissions – the payments are used to offset the negative effect of these emissions, while also encouraging investment and commitment to reducing energy use. A company’s environmental awareness and controls can now be used as a positive selling point, demonstrating commitment and social responsibility.
